White Sox Beat Twins For AL Central

Sep 20, 2014 3:30 AM

The Chicago White Sox defeated the Minnesota Twins 1-0 on Tuesday night to win the AL Central Title. After 162 games the two teams were tied for first place in the division, so a tie-breaker game was held at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago. John Danks threw eight shutout innings, allowing just two hits, with the first coming in on a double by Michael Cuddyer in the fifth inning. Bobby Jenks then came on in the ninth to retire the Twins and propel the White Sox into the playoffs. Jim Thome was responsible for the only run of the game, hitting a solo shot off Minnesota's Nick Blackburn in the bottom of the seventh inning. Blackburn pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up the one run on four hits. The White Sox will travel to Tampa Bay to face the Rays in the ALDS on Thursday.

Mussina Wins 20th For First Time In Career

Oct 15, 2014 1:09 AM

Mike Mussina won his twentieth game of the season on Sunday as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox. New York beat Boston 6-2, thanks to a strong performance from Mussina. He pitched six innings of shutout ball, striking out three batters and walking two. Mussina had never won twenty games in his career, coming close several times, and is now the oldest pitcher in MLB history to reach to milestone for the first time. The righty, who will turn 40 in December, finished the season with a 20-9 record and a 3.37 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 200 1/3 innings for the Yankees. He will be a free agent this winter, and hasn't yet decided whether or not he'll pitch next season. The Red Sox tacked on two runs in the eighth inning, to make the score 3-2, but the Yankees added three insurance runs in the ninth inning on Jonathan Papelbon. After the final out, recorded by Mariano Rivera, each one of his Yankee teammates took the time to congratulate Mussina. "It sounds pretty good I guess, I've been close," Mussina said after the game. "The guys played real solid, it's been a fun day." He revealed that Joe Girardi told him earlier in the week that he'd have all the arms in the bullpen ready to help Mussina if needed. "It took me a long time to get to something like this," he said of being the oldest pitcher ever to accomplish the feat. His season is over, but he's not sure if he'll call it a career just yet. "I don't know, we gotta get away from it a little bit," Mussina said about his possible retirement. "If it is [his last game] this was kind of a nice way to end it."

Brewers Edge Mets For NL Wild Card

Sep 18, 2014 4:22 AM

The Brewers have made the postseason for the first time since 1982 after defeating the Cubs on Sunday and watching the Mets lose to the Marlins. CC Sabathia pitched nine innings of one-run ball against Chicago, striking out seven for his 17th win of the season. New York lost 4-2 to Florida at Shea Stadium, the final game ever played there, to end their year on the final day of the regular season for the second-straight September. The game was tied at 2 apiece heading into the eighth, but Scott Schoeneweis and Luis Ayala combined to give up two runs in the inning. Damion Easley pinch hit with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, and walked with Ryan Church on deck. Church flied out to deep right, ending the Mets season. The Brewers will take on the Phillies in the NLDS.

Twins, White Sox Continue To Struggle

Sep 20, 2014 2:14 AM

The Twins and White Sox, who have combined to lose their last seven games, are struggling to win with a playoff berth on the line. The Twins have a half-game lead over the White Sox through Sept. 27's games. Minnesota, losers of their last two, will face Kansas City in their season finale on Sunday. The Royals defeated the Twins 4-2 on Saturday. Chicago, losers of their last five, will battle Cleveland on Sunday before facing Detroit on Monday in a makeup game. If the Twins win on Sunday, and the White Sox lose, Minnesota would lock up the AL Central and the league's final postseason berth. Scott Baker will take the mound for the Twins against the Royals' Brandon Duckworth. Chicago will have Mark Buehrle starting against Cleveland's Bryan Bullington on Sunday, while Gavin Floyd will pitch for the Sox on Monday versus Detroit's Freddy Garcia. The AL Central winner will face the Al East champion Rays in the ALDS.

The Mets downed the Cubs, 6-2, on Tuesday thanks to a strong performance by Johan Santana to improve their playoff chances. Red Sox Clinch Berth, Yankees Out

Oct 16, 2014 11:00 AM

The Red Sox clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday night with a tight 5-4 win over the Indians. Boston can still catch Tampa Bay for the AL Title but are assured of winning at least the Wild Card. In the process, New York has officially been eliminated from the postseason race. Tim Wakefield allowed four runs over six innings, but the Boston bullpen kept Cleveland in check to earn the victory. The Yankees were victorious, as well, winning their six-straight game but simply built too big of a hole to climb out of late in the season.

Phils Increase NL East Lead Over Mets Again

Mar 11, 2014 7:28 AM

The Phillies increased their lead in the NL East to 2 1/2 games on Monday night with a win over the Braves, coupled with a loss by the Mets to the Cubs. Philadelphia broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth with four runs to break the game open. Pat Burrell hit a three-run home run off Julian Tavarez in the inning. New York led Chicago 2-1 heading into the fourth inning, but the Cubs put six runs on the board to take the lead for good. The loss was the third-straight for the Mets. Milwaukee, idle on Monday, moved to within a game of New York for the NL Wild Card with the Mets' loss. The Phillies, meanwhile, have won three consecutive games to turn a half-game deficit (after Friday's action) into a healthy lead with less than a week left in the season.

Yanks Give Stadium Winning Send-Off

May 23, 2014 3:27 PM

The New York Yankees gave Yankee Stadium a proper send-off on Sunday night with a 7-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Andy Pettitte, who started the game for the Yankees, went five innings with three strikeouts while allowing two runs on seven hits. Johnny Damon put the Yankees on the board in the bottom of the third inning with a three-run home run to right field, momentarily giving New York a 3-2 lead. Baltimore tied the game on an RBI single by Brian Roberts in top of the fourth, but catcher Jose Molina put the Yankees on top for good in the bottom of the fourth. Molina hit a two-run home run to left field, becoming the final player ever to hit a homer at the Stadium. Jason Giambi had an RBI single in the seventh, and Robinson Cano tacked on another RBI on a sacrifice fly later in the inning. Jose Veras, Phil Coke, and Joba Chamberlain bridged the gap from Pettitte to closer Mariano Rivera, who came on in a non-save situation. Leading 7-3, Rivera got Jay Payton to ground to shortstop and Luke Scott to ground to second before Manager Joe Girardi removed Derek Jeter from the game so the home crowd could give him a warm ovation. After Jeter tipped his cap to the crowd, Rivera got Brian Roberts to ground out along the first base line to end the game. Players stayed on the field for several moments after the Yankees locked up the victory, with a number grabbing dirt from the mound. Yankee captain Derek Jeter took the microphone shortly after to address the crowd with the entire team standing behind him. "On behalf of the entire organization, we want to take this moment to salute you, the greatest fans in the world," Jeter said before the 2008 New York Yankees took a trip after the field's perimeter while tipping their caps to the fans.
